On Thursday, May 29th, students from the Media Lab at Newton South High School will present their 10th Annual Student Animation Festival.
The festival is the culmination of 9th-12th grade student projects developed throughout the year in the school's Media Lab, under the supervision of media arts teacher Carol Ober. Categories of animations include “Alien Biology,” “Tetrapods,” and “Muscle Machines.”
This year’s Festival includes work from previous years as well as this year and reflects the enormous changes the field of 3D animation has undergone in the last decade. Although the students’ work has grown in sophistication and technical challenge, the inventiveness and humor displayed in the work have been a constant.
The animations, in addition to being entertaining, encompass a variety of disciplines from math and science to art and architecture. Collaboration between the Media Lab and Newton South’s science department has led to a new 3D course in which students creatively explore the form and function of human anatomy.
Continuous screenings of the Festival will be shown from 7:40 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Newton South Lecture Hall. There will be an evening screening, also in the Lecture Hall, at 7:00 p.m.
In addition, there will be a showing in the studio at NewTV on Friday evening, May 30th at 6:00 p.m. For directions and more information, contact Melinda Gordon at NewTV.
